The multiple award-winning Russian baritone Mikhail Timoshenko possesses a wonderful timbre and sings these masterpieces of German Romanticism with excellent legato, very clear diction, and distinct articulation. His long-time piano partner Elitsa Desseva, who has also won several major competitions, performs as an equal partner. Many music lovers know Eduard Erdmann (1896–1958) primarily as a pianist; he gained a certain historical significance through his rediscovery of Franz Schubert’s piano sonatas for the concert stage. Yet Erdmann was also a composer of real stature. In addition to four symphonies and a piano concerto, he wrote a considerable number of songs. The influence of his role models Schumann and Brahms, Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss is unmistakable—yet his songs also point toward something new.
